It’s already almost Christmas, so here’s an xmas-related bun post (a.k.a. xrbp). This is the kind of bun that people like to eat during Christmas time at least in Finland. The black stuff is plum jam. If you have seen these appear elsewhere, please let the Society know.

Tiramisù in Düsseldorf

Last week I had the opportunity to enjoy this delicious tiramisù after an equally good pepper steak meal. I didn’t note the name of the place but it was a Spanish-Argentinian restaurant in the old city (Altstadt) part of Düsseldorf in Germany.

I’m a novice when it comes to i tiramisù, but I think I still recognize a tasty dessert when I eat one. In general, I tend to like bun-like delicacies more than cake-like. Despite this being the latter, my taste buds hailed it as one of the best things they’ve come across for a while. Definitely a new favorite.

I hereby suggest forming a Thursday Tiramisù Society.

Bun of the Far East

A “Brownie Slice” eaten in the Changi International Airport, Singapore. There was a small mix-up at first, for the plates containing Strawberry Rolls and Brownie Slices had changed places, and I almost got a delicious-looking, rolled red bun-thing instead of this one. Actually, that might have been better – the yellowish areas in the Brownie turned out to be some kind of nuts; not vanilla sauce as I was assuming. But well, despite that, this was also well worth it’s price of about two euros.

Norjanmunkki

That peculiar lump on the right is called norjanmunkki (Norwegian doughnut). Served at Café Amandis in Naantali in late July 2005.

The bun wasn’t much to write home about. The crust was somewhat delicious, but the inside resembled a dry cake which had to be flushed down with coffee to avoid suffocation. I’m not blaming the cafeteria, however. In fact, the place was quite ok and Naantali is a charming little town by the sea. Which is a real feat for something so close to Turku.

Beach bun

I visited the Kaukajärvi bathing beach today. I was happy to find out that the small kiosk on the beach was selling buns and coffee. The bun itself wasn’t too special, but it’s the idea that matters. Friday Bun Society hereby gives the city of Tampere a big nod for raising bun-awareness at her beaches.

Hot Cross Buns

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

Recently The Founders of Friday Bun Society came upon something called hot cross buns:

It is traditional to eat warm ‘hot cross buns’ on Good Friday. Hot Cross Buns with their combination of spicy, sweet and fruity flavors have long been an Easter tradition.

Now, it is important to understand that we at the Friday Bun Society have a firm opinion on bun traditions like this. Let no-one misunderstand what we think of hot cross buns. It would be severely foolish to think that The Founders would not have an opinion about an important matter such as this. What kind of Founders would they be, should they have no statement.

Now, there are certain organizations such as the People’s Bun Front, or the Bun Front of People that could not formulate an opinion about a simple matter like this, but The Friday Bun Society is not one of those organizations, make no mistake about that!

This is a serious matter indeed, and our opinion is as serious.
